Professor Richard Buggs, an expert on evolution, has recently highlighted a controversy stemming from the time of Charles Darwin regarding the rise of flowering plants . These make up the majority of known living plants.
Intriguingly they appeared recently (in relative geological terms) and then quickly diversified. Buggs raises the question as to why this was not a gradual process.
Of course we should not leap to the automatic assumption that what we have here is a case of divine intervention. However, like the Marie Celeste it is intriguing all the same!
