It was gratifying to read John Harvey’s Scottish Christians Against Nuclear Arms article in your February edition and I hope there will be a stimulating response.
The article states: “Their use is not compatible with the teaching of any major religion”. This truth would surely bear much fruit if all religious leaders were invited to congregate to organise a global response resulting in large gatherings to demand the compliance of the Governments of all Nations in the UN’s “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons” and to assist in the implementation of ICAN’s, “International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons”.
For nearly 40 years the General Assembly has passed deliverance after deliverance condemning the possession of nuclear weapons as contrary to the Will of God. These deliverances have invariably been passed by the unanimous stamping of feet but I wonder how much of this “enthusiasm” has ever been implemented in any of the congregations represented at any of these Assemblies!
