Following a one-year absence, one of Britain’s largest charity sales returned to Edinburgh this year.
The sale at Edinburgh New Town Church (formerly St Andrew’s and St George’s West) ran throughout Christian Aid Week.
Other than last year’s hiatus and during Covid-19 restrictions, the sale had run annually since 1973, growing from a single table of books to a huge operation that occupies the entire George Street building and spills out on to the pavement outside. In addition to books, the sale includes CDs and records, sheet music, jigsaws, toys, games and maps.
Supplemented in recent years by an autumn sale of art and Scottish books, at 50th anniversary celebrations in 2023 it was revealed that the event has raised the equivalent of £5 million at today’s prices.
