Supporting religious education in Scotland
Lynn MacMillan reflects on a milestone anniversary for a Christian education charity.
THIS year marks a decade of impactful service by Christian Values in Education Scotland (CVE Scotland).
Established by Richard Coton and the late Andy Bathgate, the organisation has tirelessly worked to promote Christian principles within Scotland’s education system. Through equipping, networking, and resourcing educators, parents, chaplains, and church workers, CVE Scotland seeks to nurture not only the academic but also the spiritual and moral development of young people across the nation.
CVE Scotland’s mission centres on integrating Christian values into school life, guided by the belief that a Christ-centred moral framework helps cultivate thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible citizens. This approach extends beyond formal religious education to permeate assemblies, curriculum development, and other educational activities.
Working collaboratively with teachers, parents, churches, and local authorities, CVE Scotland strives to embed Christian values into both policies and practices in schools. The charity operates under the leadership of Trustees including Marjorie Paton (a former National Convener of the Church of Scotland Guild) and chaired by Megan Patterson.
Over the past decade, CVE Scotland has supported Religious and Moral Education (RME) by developing high-quality teaching materials and lesson plans. These resources, freely available on their website, provide engaging content that reflects biblical truths and makes the Christian faith accessible to students of all backgrounds.
A recent addition to their offerings includes teaching materials for Relationship, Sexual Health, and Parenthood education, tailored to align with Curriculum for Excellence guidelines. These resources ensure that sensitive topics are addressed from a Christian perspective, fostering a respectful and compassionate learning environment.
Another resource highlights the story of Jane Haining, the Scottish missionary who perished in Auschwitz after refusing to abandon her Jewish students during World War II. The resource, available as a PowerPoint presentation with worksheets, is especially relevant as the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation in 2025.
CVE Scotland also supports chaplains and school workers through the efforts of Steve Younger, the part-time School Chaplaincy Project Co-ordinator. This work includes providing guidance on Religious Observance and organising initiatives like the National Chaplaincy Conference, set to take place in October 2025 at Hamilton College. The conference will feature keynote speakers, workshops, and networking opportunities for school volunteers and workers.
Recognising the challenges Christian teachers face in a secular system, CVE Scotland offers mentorship, training, and encouragement. Plans for the coming year include re-establishing the Teacher Support Network to create a platform for educators to share experiences, pray together, and explore how to live out their faith in the classroom.
CVE Scotland also connects with its community through quarterly newsletters and prayer letters. These cover topics such as Scottish Christian heritage, social justice, and mental health, while keeping subscribers updated on resources and upcoming events.
As CVE Scotland celebrates its 10th anniversary, we reflect with gratitude on the progress made and invite continued support from individuals, churches, and communities.
Ways to support CVE Scotland include:
