Railway Mission memories
In the June edition of Life and Work, Jackie Macadam’s article about Railway Mission chaplains brought back memories of my childhood in Dumbarton.
My grandfather had been a railway signalman and my grandmother was keen for my sisters and I to go to the Railway Mission Sunday School held in a hall near Dumbarton East station.
The services followed the same pattern: an opening chorus and a prayer, then we divided into age groups for a Bible reading (by the teacher of each group) followed by discussion of the reading before reuniting for the closing chorus and prayer.
As one of the choruses went: ‘I’m H-A-P-P-Y I’m H-A-P-P-Y I know I am I’m sure I am I’m H-A-P-P-Y.’
I remember it all, even after seven decades.
It is heartwarming to know the work of the Railway Mission continues through the support and care the railway chaplains provide, reaching a wide range of those who use our railways. Catherine Ward, Twynholm
