Against the backdrop of the far-right violence in the UK in early August, faith leaders met at Glasgow Central Mosque to reaffirm that common humanity is a gift of God that unites people and does not divide them.

The Rev Jan Mathieson, Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery, attended the meeting along with Rev Dr Grant Barclay, clerk to Glasgow Presbytery.

She said: “The Presbytery of Glasgow, part of the worldwide Christian Church, shares with all people of faith a belief that our common humanity, a gift of God, unites us and does not divide us.

“We affirm our God-given responsibility to care for others with compassion, kindness, respect and dignity and the particular duty to extend welcome to the stranger and the refugee, provide safe haven for those facing danger and persecution and meet the needs of those who are most vulnerable in society.

“We call on all people to reject conflict, violence, racism and prejudice which do so much harm to human beings and grieve the very heart of God.”
