EMBODY LENT
In 29 yoga postures Written by: Pauline Steenbergen Published by: Wild Goose Publications Price: £10.99
The author, a Church of Scotland minister, has married twin passions of ministry and yoga into this unusual book.
Published as a ring bound book for ease of use (which keeps pages open – particularly those demonstrating position and posture) the book is described as ‘a practical course for embodying the season of Lent through the intersection of classical Hatha Yoga practice and Christian spirituality’.
The book offers a six-week course not just an explanation of position, but through breathing, posture and silent prayer and was tested during an online programme for adults in 2023. Built around Lent, it can be used at other times of the year and is designed for use in sessions of between 10 and 30 minutes.
The book includes prayers and points to scriptural readings which can be used as part of each session along with exercises which can be linked to the Lenten journey.
The book ends with a serious of readings for Holy Week and offers a long list of suggestions for further reading. The book would be useful for anyone seeking to delve deeper into spirituality through gentle physical exercise mirroring the Lenten journey.
