Moderator’s big splash for Christian Aid

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland’s New Year’s Day Dook has made a big splash, raising over £3500 for Christian Aid.

The Rt Rev Sally Foster-Fulton, along with Principal Clerk to the General Assembly, the Rev Fiona Smith, took part in the annual event in Broughty Ferry to raise funds for Christian Aid’s Christmas Appeal. The New Year’s Day tradition, which this year attracted over 300 people, has been taking place in Broughty Ferry for 140 years.

Mrs Foster-Fulton said: “The water was freezing but what fun we had – and it was amazing to see so many people taking the plunge on New Year’s Day for different good causes. Fiona and I were keen to raise money for Christian Aid’s Christmas Appeal, which is raising awareness of the challenges facing young women living in extreme poverty in Bangladesh. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us and it’s still not too late to get us above the £4000 mark!”

Val Brown, head of Christian Aid Scotland said: “We are delighted the Moderator and Principal Clerk’s New Year challenge went well and that they’ve raised so much for our Christmas Appeal. It takes a lot of courage to step into the River Tay on January 1! Thanks to all those who have generously supported their efforts.

“Our Christmas Appeal has been shining a light on our work in Bangladesh, where our local partner is transforming lives by empowering young women to be able to run their own businesses by providing them with digital skills training. Sally and Fiona’s icy Dook has helped raise awareness of this important work.”
