Leadership of worship
Dr Doug Gay argues persuasively for devolving decision making to Presbyteries and the first and most important decision that they could take would be to allocate the resources made available to them to be used in training the whole people of God to share in the leadership of worship.
For the first three centuries of the church worship was led by church members in their homes and the church flourished. There they also took care of one another. It was said of them at the time, “See how these Christians love one another.”
The most unrecognised ministry within our congregations is that of faithful Christian members, who are increasingly taking part in Sunday worship throughout the land. In some places, as among the islands, there would be no regular Sunday worship without them. In other places Songs of Praise are held and flourish.
There are many and beautiful resources available online for those who lead worship.
There is nothing like having to lead worship to encourage us to get down to serious study of the Scriptures.
