OBITUARY

The Boys’ Brigade has been part of the fabric of life in Glasgow for nearly 140 years and the 1st Glasgow Company has been at the heart of that story since the beginning. As its longest-serving captain, Douglas Rolland was central to its ongoing success.

Douglas was a member of the Company for over 65 years, serving as an officer for 55 years and Captain for 32. As anyone who has led a voluntary organisation knows, the commitment, dedication and hard work required to maintain this type of youth work is exceptional.

Brought up and educated in Glasgow, his professional life was focused on service to young people as a music teacher, ultimately as Principal Teacher of Music at Penilee Secondary School.

Besides the Boys’ Brigade, his passions were the sea and music. He held a RYA Yachtmaster certificate and enjoyed sailing holidays around the west coast of Scotland and beyond, and was a longstanding volunteer for the paddle steamer Waverley.

His contribution to local amateur music and musical performances was also significant. Having honed his skills in the University of Glasgow’s Cecilian Society, he served as choirmaster or musical director with several choirs and musical societies.

He was a lifelong member of Stevenson Memorial Church and its successor congregations, Kelvin Stevenson Memorial and Kelvinbridge Parish Church, serving as organist for over 50 years and as an elder for 49.

Douglas died on July 28, aged 76. His wife Rosemary, whom he met at university, passed away last year. He is survived by sons Christopher and Niall, daughter-inlaw Sarah, and his first grandchild, Hope, who was born before his final illness.
