NAZARETH TRUST ANNIVERSARY MARKED AT PARLIAMENT

The Nazareth Trust celebrated the 160th anniversary of the foundation of its medical work with an event at the Scottish Parliament in June.

‘160 years of Scotland in Israel – Celebrating the Work of the Nazareth Trust’ was sponsored by Jackson Carlaw MSP, chair of the Parliament’s cross-party group Building Bridges with Israel.

Tracing its roots back to 1861, Nazareth Trust runs the Nazareth Hospital EMMS, one of the oldest hospitals in the Middle East and the largest in Nazareth, and a school of nursing. The hospital’s emergency room was recently recognised as the secondbest in Israel, and it recently opened new intensive care and labour wards.

Richard Mayhew, CEO of the Nazareth Trust, said: “We are delighted to have hosted our 160th-anniversary celebration in the Scottish Parliament. We are also thankful to Jackson Carlaw for sponsoring us and for our working relationship and shared interests, as it’s a clear example of cooperation between two nations.”

Jackson Carlaw MSP said: “I am delighted to have hosted the Nazareth Trust in Holyrood to celebrate the fantastic milestone of 160 years. As part of the work of the Cross Party Group on Building Bridges between Scotland and Israel, we are always keen to showcase originations that embody these bridges, and I cannot think of a few better examples than the Nazareth Trust. As one of the largest UK employers in Israel, the work of the Trust is worthy of high praise, and I am looking forward to highlighting this fantastic work to colleagues in Holyrood.”

One hundred guests gathered to celebrate, including long-standing supporters, representatives from Scottish Christian organisations, church leaders, and those with a connection to the Middle East. Key guests included Professor Jason Leitch, National Clinical Director for the Scottish Government, who is a Nazareth Trust board member, and the directors of Nazareth Hospital and Nazareth School of Nursing, Professor Fahed Hakim and Dr Salam Hadid.
