Elder Moderators and Titles

Reading through the Roll of Commissioners to this year’s General Assembly, I was struck by the fact that former Moderators all bear the appellation “The Very Rev”; with the exception of the one holder of the role who is not an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament. The present incumbent is not an ordained Minister either.

During the Assembly it was stressed time and again that the survival and future growth of the Church will be dependent on greater leadership provided by Elders. This suggests to me that the likelihood of future Moderators being drawn from the laity is very possible. Should the Church not be considering a suitable honorary title to acknowledge these people who have served the Church in this way?

Some might say that the Church has more important issues to overcome at this time, but we profess to be an inclusive organisation and the Church should publicly acknowledge everyone who has held this exalted position. Alternatively, we could be really radical and abolish the designation “The Very Rev”!

Regardless of this quibble, as a first time Commissioner, I did enjoy the experience of being part of the General Assembly.

I was particularly heartened by the gracious way speakers were listened to and respected even if their strongly held views expressed opposition to what was being proposed.

Thanks should be accorded to everyone involved in bringing the proceedings to fruition in an event which must have seemed strange to seasoned Assembly goers, but which nevertheless worked.
