BILL SHAW TRIBUTE
A memorial service will be held this July in tribute to the Rev Professor DWD (Bill) Shaw, who died last year at the age of 92.
Professor Shaw was one of Scotland’s most senior theologians and uniquely served as Principal of divinity faculties at both Edinburgh and St Andrews.
A solicitor before turning to the ministry of the Church of Scotland, he graduated from New College Edinburgh in 1960. After serving as assistant minister at St George’s West Church, he returned to New College in 1963 as a lecturer in Divinity, later becoming Dean of the Faculty and Principal. In 1979, he was appointed to the Chair of Divinity at the University of St Andrews, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Divinity and Principal of St Mary’s College.
Writing after his passing last summer, the Ref Professor David Fergusson said: “Notwithstanding his many achievements and the wide appeal of his lecturing and preaching, Bill will be remembered above all for his gift of friendship.”
Professor Fergusson will be among the speakers at the Memorial Service in Cramond Kirk, Edinburgh, at 2.30pm on July 14 (subject to Covid-19 restrictions). The service will be led by the Very Rev Dr Russell Barr, followed by the placing of ashes in the Garden of Remembrance at the Kirk and then a reception at the Royal Burgess Golfing Society at 4pm.
