J I PACKER

Whilst described as a ‘brand new biography’ of Jim Packer, regarded as one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century (second only to C S Lewis in a 1990s survey by Christianity Today), McGrath, the author, is at pains, in an introduction, to emphasise that it is ‘primarily an exploration and appreciation of his legacy.’
McGrath, the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University, first encountered James Innel Packer ‘Jim’ as they both travelled to a conference together.
The book seeks to focus on his origins, education and ministry, which the author emphasises were an essential part of his formation as a Christian and theologian.
McGrath believes that whilst Packer’s greatest impact as an evangelical thinker was in North America, he seeks to show his impact on evangelicalism in the UK.
This hardback differs from a 1998 publication in that it is shorter and more focused on Packer’s thoughts and writing, rather than a full biography. Packer, who became a friend of McGrath, passed away earlier this year.
As ever, the language is clear and crisp and will be appreciated by those with an interest in the lives of those who shape theology.
