OBITUARY

A long-serving minister, writer and broadcaster, and chaplain to Motherwell Football Club, the Rev Dr James Martin died in April, aged 98.

Described on the Church of Scotland website in 2016 (when he celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination) as ‘a true son of Motherwell’, Dr Martin grew up in the town and attended Dalziel Primary and High Schools. He studied at Glasgow University and ministered as Locum Tenens at Newarthill Parish Church, before being ordained and inducted at Newmilns West Church in Ayrshire.

In 1954 he accepted the call to High Carntyne Parish Church in Glasgow, where he would stay for over 30 years. Following retirement in 1987, he returned to Motherwell and continued to actively minister to several congregations over the next decade.

During his career he wrote 30 books and numerous columns for Life and Work. His services were regularly broadcast on BBC’s Sunday Service Programme. He was a friend of the theologian Professor William Barclay, whose Daily Bible Study he helped update. His interest in publishing and communications led him to serve on (and convene) committees on Saint Andrew Press, Publications and the Board of Communication.

Among his many interests was sport, and training with Motherwell Football Club led, initially informally, to his role as club chaplain.

Dr Martin was married to Marion from 1947 until her death in 2014, and is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
