Lady Marion Thanks
LETTERS
The October 2018 issue of Life and Work has just come through my letter-box.
Among the many matters of interest included one leapt out for me. In the list of legacies given to the Church, on Page 51 is a reference to Ms Marion Fraser, who left almost £80,000. I think that this probably refers to Lady Marion Fraser, who died on Christmas Day in 2016, the late wife of Sir William Kerr Fraser, who died recently.
If I am correct in this deduction, I would like readers to know that Lady Marion was exceptional in her life as well as in her generosity to the Church. She was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly in 1994-95, was for a time United Kingdom Chair of Christian Aid, and was the first Lady of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s senior Order of Chivalry. She was one of the founders of Scotland’s Churches Scheme (now incorporated in Scotland’s Churches Trust) and was President of both bodies.
The award of these remarkable distinctions, however, does not define her. She was a most gracious, modest and kind person, enriching any gathering or personal encounter in which she was involved. Her parting gift to the Church is absolutely in keeping with her truly Christian life. We should remember people like her who have lived their lives as Christ taught us.
