INCARNATIONAL MISSION

Being with the world

Written by: Samuel Wells

Published by: Canterbury Press

Price: £14.99

The author, vicar at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London and Visiting Professor Christian Ethics at King’s College, London. is a well-known writer and is no stranger to those who attended last year’s General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, as the guest speaker at a special and well-received General Assembly session entitled ‘Catalysing Kingdom Communities’.

This fascinating book – a follow up to the best-selling Incarnational Ministry – reflects on the church’s mission with all – not just those who regularly attend worship – but those who have left church, those who are ‘seekers’ and those of no faith or alternative faith, along with organisations and government.

The aim of the work is clearly spelled out in his introduction in which he explains: ‘This is a book about three things: mission, the world and being with.’

He leads readers on a ten-chapter interesting exploration of missional practice both inside and outside the church and individually and collectively.

Ministers and pastoral care teams will find his insights not only helpful, but thought-provoking and full of wisdom rooted in a thoughtful and meditative understanding of God in the world in which we live today.

THE SHEPHERD WHO COULDN’T SING

Written by: Alan Barker

THE SLEEPY SHEPHERD

Written by: Stephen Cottrell

WE’RE HUNGRY TOO

Written by: Sylvia Green

Published by: SPCK

Price: £5.99 each except The Sleepy Shepherd which is priced at £4.99 SPCK is perhaps best know to regular readers of these pages as an established publisher of quality theological titles for adults.

However, this summer the publisher is launching a new series of titles for children, including The Shepherd Who Couldn’t Sing, The Sleepy Shepherd and We’re Hungry Too.

Beautifully illustrated, the books are published ahead of the start of the church year and would make a welcome addition to the bookshelves of those charged with working with young children in congregations.

‘We’re Hungry Too’ is a seasonal reminder to think of wildlife and also of those who go hungry every day – both young and old.

‘The Shepherd Who Couldn’t Sing’ and ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’ are beautiful retellings of the Christmas stories and will offer inspiration to those charged with creating children’s nativity plays.

All three titles are aimed particularly at the younger age range of children and would make beautiful gifts, as well as be a helpful addition to the bookshelves for those involved in working with the smallest people in congregations.
