OBITUARY
The Very Rev Dr Duncan Shaw, who died on February 20, was a historian, writer, and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1987.
Born in Edinburgh in 1925, he served in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers during the Second World War, before becoming one of the many veterans to enter the ministry in the aftermath of the conflict. After studying at New College he became minister of St Margaret’s Edinburgh in 1951, and then St Christopher’s Craigentinny in 1959, where he remained until retirement.
In 1962 he gained his doctorate in Scottish history from the University of Edinburgh. His involvement with the University was lifelong – he was secretary of its General Council from 1965 to 1993, and General Council Trust from 1982-2000.
He was involved in the Advisory and Finance Committees of the Conference of European Churches for 16 years, and in 1975 was heavily involved in the campaign for Britain to enter the European Union.
Among his honours were the Romanian Patriarchal Cross in 1978, the Bundesverdienstkreuz from West Germany in 1980, and the Commander of Merit from Malta in 1987.
Also in 1987, his Moderatorial year, he was invested with the Order of St Sergius by Alexii, Metropolitan of Leningrad, the first representative of the Russian Orthodox Church ever to attend a General Assembly. (He also received the Order of St Vladimir from the Russian Consul General in Edinburgh, on the day of his retirement in 1997.)
During his year as Moderator he was invited to 10 Downing Street to discuss the possibility of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher appearing at the following General Assembly – which was to become known as ‘the sermon on the mound’.
On retirement, he resigned from Presbytery to focus on his academic work, which focused on the early history of the Church of Scotland and also on the Clan Shaw of Argyll and the Isles – which due to his eff orts was reestablished, with himself as Representer, in 2005.
His first wife, Ilse, died in 1989, and he was also predeceased by two children, Hedda and Neil. He is survived by his second wife Anna and daughter Erika.
