Taking all-age worship and learning outdoors Written by: Mary Jackson and Juno Hollyhock Published by: Canterbury Press Price: £19.99
Readers could be forgiven for thinking that ‘all age’ means simply a focus on children, but the authors are clear that this resource seeks to be inclusive and helpfully takes account of other age groups and conditions such as dementia.
Its premise is quite simple: to take congregations outdoors, working on the assumption that much talk in church relates to God’s creation and the gift of the earth.
However, the authors are keen to emphasise that it is also about learning more about the outside world and fostering a new type of worship and contemplation beyond the four walls of church buildings.
Whilst the authors are Anglican, their work could be easily adapted for a Presbyterian setting..
Among the suggestions are: an ‘all age’ Advent adventure, a prayer pilgrimage and the creation of an Easter garden.
The ideas are not simply restricted to church grounds, but are intended to release creativity and to encourage churches and those involved in worship to consider making use of the natural gifts of creation in sharing worship and deepening faith.
This would be helpful for anyone planning a different type of Sunday service, or seeking inspiration for a new style of worship.
The authors have included very practical tips on health and safety and the behind-the-scenes arrangements necessary to introduce congregations to a new style of worship.
